SPOTLIGHT ON NEWCOMERS

Lillian & Douglas Fink
I recently had the opportunity to visit a new member of St. Stephen’s Church. She is Lillian Fink. Lillian and her husband Douglas attend the 10:00 am service. Lillian also attends the Healing Service on Friday mornings.
Lillian and Doug have lived in Beachwood for several years. They were married in St. John’s Episcopal Church, Elizabeth, NJ, and they recently celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary.
Doug is an Electronic Engineer for Booz Allen Hamilton in Eatontown. Lillian is the Vice President of Red Hats-Shore Delights and past President of the Beachwood Women’s Group.
Lillian told me that, “God has blessed her and Doug so richly and they want to do something for others.” She went on to say, “I want to go where God is guiding me.” Both she and Doug have joined the Order of St. Luke and hope to become active in the healing ministry at St. Stephen’s. Lillian said, “Everyday is a new, unique day. I try to step out boldly. I want people to know how loving God is.”
The Fink’s have three daughters and seven grandchildren. Welcome to St. Stephen’s Lillian and Doug! We look forward to seeing you!

Vestry Highlights

Good Samaritan House has had some final touches and some small furniture was added. There is still electrical work that needs to be done.
Still trying to get the necessary paperwork done to obtain the property on the west side of the church.
The Profile Committee had mailed out the survey regarding the selection of the new priest and they were to be returned to the Church by August 4th.
Pastoral care to those who are shut-in at home and in the hospital that are unable to attend church.
Making a monthly calendar of events so that all are aware of church events and activities.
Vacation Bible School was held July 27th-31st. Approximately 30 children were in attendance.
Youth Group is very large and have been doing a lot of affairs and outreach with their group.
The necessary papers have been sent to the Ocean County Engineering Dept. regarding our sign on Route 532 - we have not heard any reply yet.
Fundraising - we had our Chinese Auction on August 1st and made a profit of $4, 289.00. The next event is the Fall Harvest Dinner on September 26th.
We are trying to get the Ushers to be sure to get the parishioners to wear their name tags at each service.
Outreach Program is going rather well. We have also taken on making hats and blankets for the nursery at SOCH. We are also making slippers, pillows, and lap covers for the Hospice at SOCH.
Many thanks go to Bill O’Keefe for the work he has done painting the Thrift Outlet, putting shutters on the windows, painting all the black trim on the church, and painting the Memorial Garden walls.
The Thrift Outlet is doing a great job at the work they do. It is a great support to our church.
Other reports are on file, Food Bank, ECW and Library.
NOTE: We will need help next year with the Flea Market since Dick Zipf is moving. Craig Tallman is not sure if he will be able to do it.
Help is needed with the 10:00 am service Coffee cleanup.
Why not step up to the plate and help with any of the above? What better way to get to know people!
Respectfully Submitted, Gloria Davis

ATLANTIC DISTRICT ECW: All women of the parish are invited to attend the Atlantic District Meeting of the ECW to be held at St. Barnabas by the Bay Church in Villas at 10:30 am on September 8th. Bullock will speak on “Re-discovering the Self, the Other, and God”, followed by a business meeting and lunch. Please see Maureen O’Keefe or call the church office if you would like to attend. There will be a group from St. Stephen’s attending.

FOOD PANTRY HELPERS Did you know that in addition to our faithful helpers Jeanette and Donna, we are blessed with two extra helpers every Monday? They are Missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, also known as the Mormon Church. They told me the following: “As Missionaries we have the wonderful opportunity to serve in almost every capacity. Some days we get to serve people at random in their homes or yards, but we like to have scheduled service each week.”
“A few months ago we learned about the F. In March we began helping and we are there every Monday from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. It has been an incredible experience.”
“We stock shelves, make up food orders, and do whatever is needed to make our recipients lives a little easier. Serving here has brought us so much happiness and we have made some wonderful friendships. We look forward to our continued service opportunities and hope you will contact us if there is anything more we can do.”
“Jesus Christ is Our Savior and an incredible example to us. We strive to follow and be like him. God Bless.”
“Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave,…” (Philippians 2:5-7a)

YOU ARE LINT Beginning Monday, September 14th, at 6:45 pm, all 12-18 year olds are being called to a mission like no other. Come and see what we are all about at St. Stephen’s LINT (Liturgical Inspiration Nurturing Teens). The Italian Bistro Dinner served 64 on Saturday, August 8th and made $480.00. Thanks to all who attended and purchased meals. 6 LINT members served and all was wonderful. A total of $18.00 was donated to the group toward this years events. The Diocesan Great Adventure Trip was Saturday, August 15th. 16 of us were in attendance and enjoyed a luncheon where we were greeted by Canon Kep Short and Bishop Romero. See you in September when we will be planning our October event schedule for Halloween, including Waretown’s Haunted Hayride Skit and a dance. For more information please call Chris or Michael Presti at 609-661-2855.

Vacation Bible School 2009 This year’s theme was Crocodile Dock. We had 29 children registered and everyone had a great time! We read Bible Stories with “Grandma Lin”, who brought the stories to life with props and lots of action. The children made crafts with Miss Kathy such as picture frames, necklaces, and prayer boxes. They watched a DVD with the VBS mascot, Chadder the Chipmunk. The kids also played games that related to the bible story. Miss Patti prepared a snack everyday that also related to the story for the day. On Thursday night, the children had a performance for their family and friends, and they sang the songs that they were practicing all week. Then we went into the Parish Hall for refreshments and display of the crafts. The kids and staff had a fantastic time and we are looking forward to next year! Thanks to our volunteers: Lin Murdoch, Kathy Herring, Patti Gerety, Donna Rawley, Beth MacKenzie, Tori Presti, Lara Beck and Tyler Conroy. Thanks also to those who donated food items for snack time! And last, but not least, thanks to all of the families that donated food items for our Food Pantry to help out local families in need. Thanks be to God for answering prayers and having another successful VBS! Until next year! Linda Rietmann & Barbara Jani, Coordinators

ORDER OF ST. LUKE - HEALING MISSION
October 18th, 3:00 pm

Here at St. Stephen’s. The mission will be led by The Rev. Richard W. Kitz who will be discussing with us the effects of stress in our lives and how we can find harmony, balance, and the “melody of life in tune“. Praise music will be supplied by “Celebrate”. There will be anointing, healing prayer and the laying on of hands. Refreshments will be served.
If you feel called to the Healing Ministry, a Bible Study is currently underway. Please see Nancy Sullivan or Corinne Cromwell for more information.

MEET YOUR VESTRY, Ken Baulderstone My wife, Glenys, and I joined St. Stephen’s after we moved to Waretown in 2003 . Glenys has become involved as a Lay Reader, and greatly enjoys being involved in the Worship Service in this way.
Glenys and I are both Australian. I spent my childhood in Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, attended Catholic Schools, and was an Altar Boy. I studied economics at Adelaide University and Accounting at the South Australian Institute of Technology. I joined NCR Corporation in Sydney in 1969 selling computers and moved on to sales management and professional services management positions.
In 1971, I met and married Glenys and we have a son, Adam, who now lives with us in Waretown, and a daughter Melanie, who lives in Princeton with her husband Joel and their son, Alex. In 1978 we embarked on an adventure, a two year assignment to a senior management position with NCR in Tehran, Iran. Soon after we implemented the plans for this move the Islamic Revolution took place in Iran, and I worked in Iran during the revolution while Glenys and the children lived in Dayton, Ohio where the NCR headquarters was located. This was my first experience with terrorism, something that we never experienced in the peace and security of Australia. I soon moved to a position with the Middle East & Africa region of NCR based in Dayton. At that time we became members of St. George’s Episcopal Church. In 1981, instead of returning to Australia as planned, we moved to Kuwait when I became the Country Manager of NCR in Kuwait and we lived there until 1983 when I was promoted to another position back in Dayton. During our time in Kuwait we developed a good understanding of the Gulf Arabs, their way of life, and clear differences between Islam and Christianity. Just before we left there was series of terrorist bombings that included totally destroying the residence building at the US Embassy, completely shutting down the country and presenting certain complications to our departure plans.
In my positions back in Dayton with the Atlantic Middle East Africa region and other corporate positions, I had the opportunity for another expatriate appointment, as a member of the executive management of NCR Japan in 1997. Life in Japan was very different from anything we had experienced and we had the opportunity to learn to speak a little Japanese and learn their culture. After two wonderful years we returned to Dayton in 2000, and we moved to Waretown in 2003.
During our time in Japan Glenys studied Sumie (Japanese Brush Painting) and Ikebana (Japanese Flower Arranging), and when back in Dayton she continued to study painting at the Dayton Art Institute. Since moving here she has continued her painting studies with the Pine Shores Art Association in Stafford.
Since leaving NCR in 2005, after 37 years, I have been active in starting new software companies and while I am retired I continue to be engaged in the management of these companies. In my spare time I keep busy playing a lot of tennis, I am Secretary of the Tennis Club; play an occasional game of golf; serve as President of the Bocce League in Greenbriar Oceaniare and as President the Investment Club; and am a member of the Men’s Club (which is a generous supporter of our Food Bank); and most importantly I am grandfather to our two year old grandson Alex, who was christened at St. Stephen’s.

Since joining the Vestry I continue to be amazed at the extent of community service performed by the people of St. Stephen’s and the strengths of the people that make up the congregation and consider it a great privilege and responsibility to serve our Church in this way.
